Abstract

The proposed article presents generalized material on the historiography of the sale of clay products by potters of the Left Bank Ukraine. Territorially, the study covers Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Poltava and Kyiv Governorates, where pottery became the most widespread. Chronologically, the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the period when scientific papers containing information on the subject under study appeared en masse. The analysis of the literature made it possible to draw conclusions about the dispersion and certain fragmentation of the materials on the researched issue, which determined the purpose of the proposed research. It was established that most of the research was carried out at the initiative of governorate council institutions. It was found out that the field of view of the scientists included both separate centers, Shatryshche and Oleshnya in Chernihiv region, Opishnya in Poltava region), and separate regions, Kupyansk and Okhtyrka Districts in Kharkiv region, Romny and Lokhvytsya Districts in Poltava region). Some intelligences are completely devoted to the comprehensive study of the pottery industry of the governorate, Poltava Governorate, Kyiv Governorate), or those, that contain information about pottery in the context of other crafts, Chernihiv Governorate, Kharkiv Governorate). The author observed that almost all analyzed sources contain information on the researched issue to a greater or lesser extent. It was found out that potters used wholesale and retail methods of sale, exchange and sale for cash as forms of sale; not only producers were involved in the process, but also intermediaries, buyers, chumaks, pot carriers. Based on the studied sources, it was found that some of them have information about sales areas, retail prices, and information about the metrological and terminological system for distinguishing tableware by size at the time of sale. It was established that researchers often used the works of their predecessors to compare the obtained data. It was found that surveys of the pottery industry in various provinces were most often carried out by government council statisticians, geologists, ethnographers.
